Daniel Ricardo Pedraza Ramírez

Abstract

This qualitative case study attempted to understand how students and their teacher used songs to learn and teach a foreign. Participants were four beginning-level English language learners at a foreign languages program at a public university in Colombia.

Findings revealed that when working with songs, students worked actively in order to improve their language proficiency and communicative skills; and the teacher had to act as an innovative agent to motivate her students to develop and improve their linguistic competences. Finally, the author presented some pedagogical implications when using songs to learn a foreign language.

Key words: songs, lyrics, communicative skills, linguistic competences.
