Guru Nanak Ji’s Birthday, commonly known as Gurpurab, is one of the most important festivals for Sikhs all around the world. This day marks the birth of the founder of Sikhism and falls on November 23 this year. Guru Nanak Ji was born in 1469 and beliefs of Sikhism started from his holy thoughts. Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born on 15th April 1469 in Rai-Bhoi-di Talwandi in the present Shekhupura District of Pakistan, which is now known as Nankana Sahib. Guru Nanak Gurupurab also as Guru Nanak’s Prakash Utsav, celebrates the birth of the first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak. This is one of the most sacred festivals in Sikhism or Sikhi. The festivities in the Sikh religion revolve around the anniversaries of the 10 Sikh Gurus. On Gurpurab, Sikhs wear new clothes and go to the Gurudwaras. The morning of Gurpurab starts with Prabhat Feris in the Gurudwara followed by processions in localities singing hymns. Sikhs offer their prayers and pay homage to the Guru Granth Sahib.
